E. J. Giovannetti was first elected in 2002 and is serving his second term. He represents District II which consists primarily of Ankeny, Grimes, Johnston, Sheldahl, and Urbandale. Mr. Giovannetti’s experience in government began on the Planning and Zoning Commission in Urbandale in 1973. He was appointed mayor in 1977 and served in that position through 1997. He has been in the private practice of law with Hopkins & Huebner, P.C. since 1970. Prior to that time, he served as Assistant Attorney General, Counsel for Legislative Research Bureau, and Deputy Industrial Commissioner, all with the State of Iowa.
He has served as a chairman and member of the Greater Des Moines Civic Center, chairman and member of the Mid-Iowa Association of Local Governments, president of the Iowa Municipalities Workers’ Compensation Association, president of the Urbandale Economic Development Association, a member of Affordable Housing Task Force, past member of the National League of Cities Committee on Finance, Administration, and Inter-Government Relationships, Mercy Clinics Board of Directors, and chairman and member of Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau. Professionally, he has served on the Board of Directors of both the Polk County Bar Association and Iowa State Bar Association. He was a member of the task force to study Iowa’s System of State and Local Taxation. He is past president of the League of Iowa Municipalities, and Iowa League of Cities Hall of Fame. He was Urbandale Citizen of the Year in 1990. Since being elected to the Board of Supervisors, Mr. Giovannetti has played an instrumental role in the creation of the 2030 Comprehensive Plan and the Mid-Iowa Sexual Assault Response Team (SART). He is also currently serving on the board of the Polk County Housing Trust Fund, Central Iowa Regional Drinking Water Commission, Choose Des Moines Communities, Des Moines Art Festival, Greater Des Moines Partnership, MPO Regional Planning Committee, and the Mid-Iowa Association of Local Governments (MIALG).
Mr. Giovannetti was born and raised in northern California. He attended and graduated from Bellarmine College Preparatory San Jose. He obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. He has served as managing partner for his law firm.
Mr. Giovannetti has two adult children, Mark of Fairfield, Iowa, and Beth of Alexandria, Virginia.
